Izkina is the aptly named tapas restaurant and bar in the revitalized Deep Ellum area just east of downtown Dallas. It means corner in Basque (esquina would be the Spanish equivalent), the language of the northwestern region of Spain known for its exceptional tapas (small shareable plates). Izkina is situated on the cozy corner of Elm and Crowdus in a century old building that had been vacant for decades until 2018 when Izkina opened its doors.
One of the things I appreciate most about Izkina is that it has a fairly extensive happy hour menu offering reasonable prices on both food and drink. Many of the small bites are served on a top notch crusty piece of bread. In addition to sangria and draft beer happy hour also features cocktails you rarely find served even at Spanish restaurants: basically what are sometimes called wine coolers, but with an Iberian twist. Who knew you could mix red wine and cola?! Or a dry sherry with lemon soda?
And if you really, really like the food and drink at Izkina you can even live here! Seriously. The same address houses Deep Ellum Hostel. For $35 and up you can stay in one of the gender separate dorm rooms or one of five private rooms.
