Hazel’s Kitchen is Dallas-Fort Worth’s newest Filipino restaurant. Located on highway 380 in McKinney (heading towards Princeton) is an outdoor Filipino dining experience run by a husband and wife duo from The Philippines.
They serve authentic Filipino dishes, like beef mami and pork mami, which consist of either beef brisket or pork, egg noodles, star anise, and hard boiled eggs; as well as Filipino congee rice.
I ordered the pork belly BBQ, which came with a side of rice and a type of sweet and sour sauce. The barbecue is smoked out back and tastes perfectly charred, while also being balanced by sweetness. The rice was warm and sticky, which is how I personally prefer rice.
For dessert, I enjoyed an avocado milkshake for the first time. I was hesitant to try it, but it ended up being one of my favorite milkshakes ever. The milkshake is made with one fresh avocado, ice, milk, and condensed milk. If you’re not as adventurous, they also serve mango and strawberry milkshakes with the option of topping them with graham.
Of course, no Filipino meal is complete without the iconic halo-halo dessert. Halo-halo is Tagalog for “mixed” and is a popular cold dessert made up of crushed ice, evaporated milk, and sweetened beans and fruits.
